Bubble baths, face masks, binging Netflix, and eating $20 foreign chocolate, that’s what self-care is right? At least that seems to be the general idea in today’s world.
While these things have a time and place, there’s something better to include in your “self-care” routine: challenging yourself. Self-care isn’t always about treating yourself, it’s about bettering yourself. This idea can be applied to everything in your life including fitness. Challenging your body to your limit is the only way that you will develop physically and grow mentally. When you think about it, fitness goals are only satisfying because of the struggle to get to that point, not because they’re easy.
When making goals that are challenging make sure that they are S.M.A.R.T: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound. This structure makes sure that your goals aren’t too broad, or too difficult. Not only will you be able to see yourself improve and achieve your goals, which is the greatest “self-care” of all, but you’re able to build trust and confidence in yourself that will carry over to self love over time.
What S.M.A.R.T goals will you implement this month? Maybe try taking a month completely without alcohol or sweets. You can train for a 5k or prepare yourself to take a long hike through the mountains. The options are limitless and should be tailored to what you want for yourself.
Keep having your spa nights. You deserve it, but don’t forget to push yourself out of your comfort zone to nurture your self image. It’s equally as important.
