A Paleo devotee, low-fat dieter, and a vegan walk into a restaurant…and quickly proceed to get into a fight about who’s eating the healthiest.
That basically sums up the current climate of the food world: We’ve got an array of different diets and gurus, each touting a different diet and each claiming that theirs is the best. And for every argument you find, there’s always someone there to counter it. Paleo dieters are killing the planet—but are also superhealthy. Vegans are nutritionally deficient— but also less likely to develop diabetes, high blood pressure, and certain cancers. Low-fat diets don’t work—but they’re consistently recommended for healthier hearts. You get the idea.
How did the concept of a “healthy diet” get so freaking confusing? And can we ever just sit down and agree on something?
